Why Your Independent Project Manager Isn’t Unbiased

As independent project managers, we pride ourselves on being completely conflict-free. To our clients, our conflict-free nature is one of the most attractive aspects of our services. However, to say that we are unbiased is not 100% accurate. We are completely and totally biased towards our clients’ needs and best interests. In order to truly act as an owner’s representative the project management team needs to fully understand the business owner’s needs and vision and have no other vested interest in the project at hand.

Below are three reasons why it is best to work with an independent project management team that is very much biased towards the client’s needs:

  • Advocate- The whole purpose of bringing independent project managers on to your team is so that they can act as your advocate. In order to do this properly, the project management team cannot have any other vested interest in the project. You want an experienced team with the credentials to back up their expertise so that you have true advocates defending your budget, schedule and ensuring that the project suits the needs of your business.

  • Conflict free- There should be no interest in regards to the design, to the lease transaction, or to the construction budget. You don’t want the team you hired to have ulterior interests in your project. Ultimately, you want a project management team who only has eyes for your priorities.

  • Level of service- Ideally, a third-party project management firm will specialize in only project management. You want to work with a firm who is providing you with the services in which their core competencies lie. This way, you will benefit from a superior level of service. A team of project managers who specialize in only project management will be able to serve your needs with much more agility, creativity and expertise than a team who has the distractions of multiple lines of business.
