What is BIM? And 3 Reasons Why It’s Taking Over

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is the process of designing and building collaboratively using one coherent system of computer models. Instead of separate sets of drawings that are used by various design professionals, BIM offers a 3-D or 4-D, interactive model of a building’s systems and assemblies. This method has become hugely popular. In a recent study by Research and Market, it was estimated that the international BIM market will reach $11.7 billion by 2022 with a projected annual growth rate of 21.6% between 2016 and 2022.

There are many, many reasons why the industry is moving in the BIM direction, but here are a few of the highlights:

  • Efficiency & Collaboration– BIM creates a shared model that can be used across multiple disciplines. The models contain more information than a drawing set and is easier to interpret. Each disciple can annotate the model and add their input and intelligence to the project. BIM technology is also more advanced than 2D drawing tools, so models can be produces faster and with less labor. Removing the time that it takes to create discipline-specific plans and coordinating changes and comments from each member of the project team can significantly increase project efficiency.
  • Simulation and Visualization– With technology rapidly advancing, there are now many tools that allow designers to simulate things such as sunlight during different times of day and seasons. BIM technology can also calculate building energy performance which can help engineers and other project team members.
  • The Cloud- BIM models will be tied to a database so you will have all of the intelligence and information at your fingertips, no matter where you are. Having your BIM model on the cloud means that you will have access to up-to-date, detailed project information on any device, anywhere you go.
